How Do Peristaltic Pumps Work?

peristaltic pump is positive displacement pump that transfers a wide variety of fluids. This pump doesn’t have valves, seals, or glands and is inexpensive to maintain. Every peristaltic pump features flexible hoses or tubes, giving an open flow path which gives a high resistance to abrasion and permits the easy flow of solids and viscous media.  

How does a peristaltic pump work?

The working principle of a peristaltic pump is based on moving a product through a hose, by compressing and decompressing. The ‘shoes’ of the pump are fixed onto the rotor of the pump, which press the fluid through the pump. The working principle is similar to how our body pumps blood, nutrients, and oxygen. 

Types of peristaltic pumps

There are two types of peristaltic pumps: hose pumps and tube pumpsTube pumps are perfect for lower flow rates, are fully programmable, and have options of multiple heads. Hose pumps, conversely, are perfect for pumping highly solid content. 

How are peristaltic pumps used?

Peristaltic pumps are used in a variety of industries. They are often found pumping slurry with high solid content from the mining industry, ad and bio gas and sewage facilities where there are highly abrasive, gritty and viscous fluids. The tube pumps are used more for chemicals or in a laboratory setting.
